2024:

  • OreSec (Mines Cybersecurity Club) team has participated in the Rocky Mountain Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition (RMCCDC) and reached the 2nd place at the end. Team members include Garrett Thompson, Benjamin Breisch, Tristen Erpelding, Dalton Baum, Jackson Ballard, Charlie Mowbray, and Wally Schageman, March 2024.

2023:

  • Mines students participated in the 2023 NSA CodeBreaker Challenge, and completed it at the 29th place in the nation, December 2023.
  • OreSec (Mines Cybersecurity Club) team participated in the 2023 DOE CyberForce Competition, and completed it at the 8th place in the nation. Team members include Garrett Thompson, Sebastian Willowhawk, Ben Breisch, Eugin Pahk, Charles Mowbray, and Will Wylie,  November 2023.
  • OreSec (Mines Cybersecurity Club) team participated in the 2023 CSAW ESC (Embedded Security Competition) Competition, and completed it at the 5th place in the NA/MENA region. Team members include Garrett Thompson, Tristen Erpelding, Eugin Pahk, and Tylor Bray, November 2023.
  • PhD student Mengxia Ren and Dr. Chuan Yue advised three local high-school students (Matthew Hu, Aryamann Sheoran, and Emilio Leyva) on cybersecurity research, June~August 2023. 
  • Michelle Isenhart from the NSA Academic Engagement team visited Mines and provided an information session about the internship and job opportunities at NSA, April 2023.

2022:

  • Fifteen Mines students participated in the 2022 NSA CodeBreaker Challenge and placed 17th out of 447 universities, December 2022.
  • Three Mines teams completed the national-level 2022 DOE CyberForce Competition:  Ben Breisch, Tristen Erpelding; Garrett Thompson, Sebastian Willowhawk; Lilly Wilson, Jackson Pow, Jessica Engel, Nicholas Estoll.  November 2022.
  • PhD students Anhao Xiang and Mengxia Ren gave two guest lectures on SQL Injection Attacks and Defenses in the CSCI 403 Database Management class, November 2022.
  • Four CS@Mines students received the competitive 2022-2023 Department of Defense Cyber Scholarship Program (CySP) award, which comes with full tuition, room/board stipend, healthcare, a laptop (for new scholars), and a paid internship, August 2022.  Vincent Morgan, Christopher Engel, and Luke Beukelman are returning scholars.  Maksym Bondar is a new scholar.
  • PhD students Anhao Xiang, Mengxia Ren, and Weiping Pei as well as Dr. Chuan Yue organized a two-month DoD CySP Cyber-REACH 2022 Summer Research Camp for local high-school students, June~August 2022. 
  • PhD students Anhao Xiang and Mengxia Ren gave two guest lectures on SQL Injection Attacks and Defenses in the CSCI 403 Database Management class, April 2022.
  • OreSec (Mines Cybersecurity Club) team has qualified for the Rocky Mountain Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition (RMCCDC). Team members include Vincent Morgan, Lilly Wilson, Benjamin Breisch, Ryan Zhang, Ryker Fish, Nicholas Estoll, Jesus Nunez, and Davita Bird; Anhao Xiang, Mengxia Ren, and Jordan Hankin served as the White Team members (i.e., competition officials) from Mines, February 2022.
  • PhD student Weiping Pei gave an invited CAE Tech Talk to the CAE community on Security Protection and Quality Control in Crowdsourcing, January 2022.
  • Fourteen Mines students participated in the 2021 NSA CodeBreaker Challenge, January 2022.

2021:

  • Two OreSec (Mines Cybersecurity Club) teams completed the national-level 2021 DOE CyberForce Competition at the 45th and 49th places, respectively.  One team consists of Vincent Morgan, Ryker Fish, Benjamin Breisch, Joseph Threlkeld, Lilly Wilson, and Jacob Parker.  The other team consists of Chris Engel, Nicholas Estoll, Sebastian Willowhawk, Ryan Zhang, Samuel Clay, and Brendan Moroney.  November 2021.
  • PhD student Mengxia Ren advised six local high-school students on cybersecurity research during the summer, August 2021.

  • OreSec (Mines Cybersecurity Club) team Vincent Morgan, Ryker Fish, Lilly Wilson, Ben Breisch, Joseph Threlkeld, Emily Christensen, and Jesus Nunez participated in the Rocky Mountain Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition (RMCCDC); Weiping Pei, Christine Liebe, Susan McMillin, and Jordan Card served as the White Team members (i.e., competition officials) from Mines, March 2021.
  • Mines WiCyS student chapter president Weiping Pei organized an online meeting between Annabelle Lee and female students who are interested in Cybersecurity, February 2021.
  • Annabelle Lee gave us an invited talk on Cybersecurity: Tactics, Techniques, and Procedures (TTP), February 2021.

  • The Cybersecurity Research Education Adventure Program for Community College and High School (Cyber-REACH) Students and Teachers (funded by DoD) attracted over 30 high school teachers, high school students, and community college students in its first cohort, December 2020.
  • PhD student Ahmed Alshehri advised one local high-school student on cybersecurity research during the year, December 2020.
  • PhD student Weiping Pei advised three local high-school students on cybersecurity research during the summer, August 2020.

2019:

  • Thirty-seven Mines students participated in the 2019 NSA CodeBreaker Challenge, December 2019.
  • Dr. Chuan Yue organized and led two one-hour breakout sessions in the NSF Convergence Accelerator (C-Accel) Conference, December 2019.
  • OreSec (Mines Cybersecurity Club) team completed the national-level 2019 DOE CyberForce Competition at the 75th place.  Team members include Fisher Darling, Vincent Morgan, Ivan Krukov, ThienNgo Le, and Jacob Vossen, November 2019.
  • PhD student Yi Qin started the Women in Cybersecurity (WiCyS) student chapter at Mines and served as its first president, August 2019.
  • PhD students Weiping Pei and Zhiju Yang as well as Dr. Chuan Yue organized a 4-day Introduction to Cryptography professional development training workshop for local high-school and middle-school teachers, June 2019. 
  • Dr. Chuan Yue organized and led a one-hour breakout session on Integrating Security Across the Curriculum in the National Cybersecurity Education Workshop sponsored the National Science Foundation and the National Security Agency, April 2019.
  • PhD students Ahmed Alshehri and Khalid Alkhattabi as well as Dr. Chuan Yue gave three guest lectures on Making Cyberspace Secure and Trustworthy in the CSCI 101 Introduction to Computer Science class, April 2019.

  • Undergraduate student Fisher Darling started the Mines Cybersecurity Club (OreSec) and served as its first president, January 2019.
